Natural Factors

The Newton Street Site is located alongside the canal, in between Lacy Street and Newton Street; Chester Road and Stretford Mall are on the west side of the site.

The trees around the site become natural barrier between the noisy Chester Road and the site.

Majority of the site is currently used as a free car parking,a post office and a Atlas Heating Supplies Ltd sit at the east side.

The car park accomodates more than 80 cars.

The transport in Stretford works quite well,as stated by the residents.

Stretford tram station is just few steps away from the site and a bus stop is just next to the site where buses linking Trafford center,Manchester city center,Bolton and Flixton stop .

Marine west coast climate,no dry season or warm summer;Heavy rain during mild winter.Average temprature in winter is around 4 ℃, average temperature in summer is around 16 ℃.Average sunlight hour is less than 1 hour in winter but more than 5 hours in summer.

NORTH
Access Point (Vehicle)

The Newton Street site does not have a obvious natural topography but the car park sinks down a bit to accommodate the vehicle.

The car park is free to use, therefore the utilization is relatively high.

Circulation

People can enter the car park from three sides of the car park. The only barrier is the west side where a row of handrail sits.

View

The view from Stretford Mall is blocked by the Chester Road which is around 30m in width. The shops inside Stretford Mall all face inwards, which created an introverted atmosphere, this is one of the problems I want to solve for Stretford. The same thing happens at the north side where Essoldo Cinema sits. Therefore, the only view comes from the housing area at the south side.

Issue-Potential

Because of the high utilization of the original car parking, and also for the future users of the building, part of the parking slot should be preserved for the visitors of the building.

Remember the woman who mentioned that she wishes that the introverted atmosphere of Stretford could be improved, rather than creating a building like Stretford Mall where all of the shops face inwards, the building should face outwards to welcome people.

There should be friendly connections with the transport hub and the sub way around the site .

The green area around the site,as the natural barrier, should be preserved as much as possible, some of the outdoor/public space can be potentially developed from these green area.
